The photo above was taken by the Russian photographer Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorski in the early 1900s in Dagestan in the Caucasus. Though small the Caucasus or Caucasia is one of the most linguistically, ethnically, and culturally diverse regions on earth. The region is bordered by Russia, Turkey, Iran, and the Caspian and Black Seas.

Some Americans may remember what some call Russia's equivalent to 9/11, the Beslan School Massacre, where over 300 civilians who were mostly children were killed by Chechen militants on September 1, 2004. Beslan is in the northern Caucasus.
